What Is Sports Performance Testing — And Why Every Serious Athlete Needs It

Most athletes train by feel. They work hard, they follow a program, and they hope the results will come. Sports performance testing replaces hope with data. It tells you exactly where you are, exactly where you need to be, and exactly what needs to change to get there.
WHAT DOES SPORTS PERFORMANCE TESTING MEASURE?
At ACE Performance, our testing battery is tailored to the athlete and their sport. Standard measures include:
Sprint Speed and Acceleration — Timed over 5m, 10m, and 40m to assess acceleration capacity and maximum velocity. Benchmarked against sport-specific normative data.
Force and Power Output — Measured via force plates during vertical jump, broad jump, and sprint mechanics analysis. Identifies power deficits and asymmetries.
Change of Direction — Timed agility tests relevant to the athlete's sport. Identifies weaknesses in reactive movement.
Strength and Symmetry — Key lower and upper body strength measures. Limb symmetry index calculated to identify side-to-side deficits that increase injury risk.
Aerobic Capacity — Sport-specific fitness testing. Protocols matched to the energy demands of the athlete's game.
HOW TESTING DRIVES BETTER TRAINING OUTCOMES
Without baseline data, training is generic. With testing data, every program decision is directed at the athlete's specific limiting factors. An athlete who scores well on aerobic capacity but poorly on acceleration does not need more running — they need more power and sprint mechanics work.
Testing also creates accountability. When athletes know their numbers will be retested at the end of a program, training quality improves. Objective progress data is also invaluable for athlete wellbeing — seeing measurable improvement is one of the most powerful motivators in sport.
