It can be easy to get comfortable and also bored with your training program. We often forget that we also train because of how fun and challenging it can be. This being said it is super important to ensure we aren’t losing these feelings when training by continuing to challenge yourself and your body.
When it comes to power it is easy to prescribe, complete repetitions of an exercise as explosively and fast as you possibly can. However people easily get caught in the loophole of keeping their exercise selection the same and lack something very important, VARIETY!
people easily get caught in the loophole of keeping their exercise selection the same and lack something very important, VARIETY!
This is the spice that can give your session its flavour. It can be as simple as throwing something heavy, jumping with something heavy, or running with something heavy. We’ll give you three ways you can ‘enjoy the power’ and add some variety to your sessions.
1. Medicine Ball Throw (variations) - Most medicine ball throwing exercises are a great way to help improve power in the lower and upper body power as the projection of the ball depends on how explosive you can push with the arms and legs in unison. Can also be great fun if you are doing these with a partner to see who can throw the furthest and highest!
2. Loaded jumping - Jumping with a weight vest, barbell, dumbbell, medicine ball, aqua bag or any other weighted equipment is be a great and challenging way to develop lower body power. You can always switch up the exercises by completing lateral and single leg variations as well.
3. Loaded running - Preferably with a sled but also with weight vests as well, short explosive bouts using this equipment will do wonders in improving acceleration power. Can also be completed laterally over a short distance.
The great thing about these variations is that you are constantly pushing the body to adapt to new challenges and dealing with weight in different planes of motion. Have go with these next time and enjoy the power!
